Amistad Week, commemorating the slave ship that was seized off Montauk in 1839 and featuring a series of events in the hamlet dedicated to history, art, and community, begins next week.
On Wednesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Michael A. Butler will help unleash participants’ inner artist with a scoop-and-paint workshop for all ages at Second House Museum. The cost is $10.
“Traces of the Trade: A Story From the Deep North,” in which Katrina Browne, one of the documentary’s directors and writers, tells the story of her forefathers, members of the largest slave-trading family in American history, will be screened on Friday, Aug. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Ocean Institute at the Montauk Lighthouse. A panel discussion with Mia Certic of the Montauk Historical Society, Georgette Grier-Key of the Eastville Community Historical Society, and Brenda Simmons of the Southampton African American Museum will follow. Space is limited.
“Amistad,” the 1997 film directed by Steven Spielberg, will be shown with an intermission and refreshments, followed by a panel discussion to connect the past with the present, on Aug. 30 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Montauk Library. Maria DeLongoria, the Eastville society’s vice president, will moderate a discussion that will include Donnamarie Barnes and David E. Rattray of the Plain Sight Project and Paula Mann-Agnew, executive director of Discovery Amistad.
