Concerned Citizens of Montauk announced the election of Jessica James as the new board president at its annual meeting last month. Ms. James succeeds David Freudenthal, who has led the organization’s mission to protect Montauk’s unique environment through education, advocacy, and citizen action since 2021.
The C.C.O.M. board is a group of volunteers elected by members to lead and support the organization’s staff. A board member for 15 years, Ms. James was a part-time resident of the hamlet starting in 1964 and has been a year-round resident since 2008. She built her own sustainable timber-frame house powered by solar and geothermal energy, showcasing her dedication to environmental stewardship.
A 12-year volunteer emergency medical technician with the Montauk Fire Department and the committee chairwoman for the Montauk Historical Society’s Second House Museum, she graduated from the University of California at Berkeley and has a professional background as a chef and restaurateur. She is an aspiring birdwatcher, organic gardener, beekeeper, and poultry enthusiast, and played a key role in launching C.C.O.M.’s collaboration with the Montauk School’s annual Science Fair.
“I can’t think of a better use of my time and effort than to try to protect the place I love,” Ms. James told The Star this week. “This board of directors makes it fun, and our wonderful staff makes it possible.”
“Jessica’s passion for Montauk and environmental sustainability will inspire our community and drive C.C.O.M.’s mission forward,” Mr. Freudenthal said in a statement announcing Ms. James’s election.
