It was 23 years ago Wednesday that life changed for many Americans. When terrorists hijacked airplanes and deliberately crashed them into the World Trade Center, New Yorkers were left with a newfound feeling of vulnerability.

In the days after the attacks, many emergency services workers from the East End headed to Lower Manhattan to help with cleanup and recovery efforts. On Wednesday at 6 p.m. members of all the fire, police, and ambulance departments from the East End will meet at the Hook Mill in East Hampton Village for a short 20-minute ceremony of remembrance.

Chris Beckert, the chief of the Amagansett Fire Department, and Thomas Gardella, the mayor of Sag Harbor and the chaplain of its Fire Department, will speak before a wreath is placed at the memorial there.
