Bonac's boys track team team finished sixth at the League IV championship on Jan. 18, their best performance in more than a decade. The team scored 35 points, a huge improvement over recent years. In 2024, it scored just one point, and in 2025, it scored eight.
“I am very proud of how they all stepped up in the biggest meet of the season,” the head coach, Kevin Barry, said on the ride home from Suffolk Community College in Brentwood on Sunday. “Even the boys who didn’t score ran so well.”
The 4-by-800-meter relay team of Sean Perez, Marcus Oranksy, Hudson Goulart, and Jasper Samuelson took first place with an 8:49 finish. Samuelson also placed second in the 3,200 meters with a 9:57 finish, extremely impressive, especially considering it was his first time running that event.
The 4-by-200 relay team of Nelvin Suchite, Justin Herrera, Alex Cabrera, and Eduardo Calle snagged third with a time of 1:42.79.
Goulart surprised everyone with a third-place finish in the high jump, reaching 5 feet, 4 inches.
Emmett Schumann, a freshman, finished sixth in the 600 meters with a time of 1:32.11. Sean Perez finished fifth in the 1,000 meters in 2:49.33.
Coach Barry says boys track is now focusing on the small school championship on Feb. 1, though there is one more meet before then: the Eli Acosta invitational on Saturday.
