The Bonac girls indoor track team competed in its first meet of the season on Saturday at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, a meet involving a host of county high schools, from Southold and Mattituck west to Longwood and Lindenhurst. The team opted not to attend a meet the week before because there was no fully automated timing system.

Coach Yani Cuesta called Saturday’s competition a great baseline. “We are very excited to see where the girls are starting. Now we can better focus their training.”

Among the standouts in the first meet were Sierra Stumpf, a sophomore, who tied her personal record in the high jump, hitting 4 feet 6 inches, and Leah McCarron, who set a personal record in the 55-meter dash, at 7.85 seconds.

Thirteen girls took to the track in events they had never competed in before, which Cuesta was happy to see. “We’re super-excited with how well everyone has shown up to compete and try new events. It’s a strong start to this winter season.”
