The 46th weeklong Hampton Classic Horse Show, one of just nine five-star-rated shows in the country, is to begin at the 60-acre Snake Hollow Road, Bridgehampton, showgrounds on Sunday at 8 a.m. with leadline classes for children judged by Joe Fargis, an Olympic gold medalist, in the Grand Prix ring.

According to Marty Bauman, the show's publicist, there will be more than 200 classes in six show rings during the course of the week, and more than 70 vendors in the Agneta Currey Boutique Garden. Besides the opening day ceremonies, at noon, Sunday's events include the $30,000 Jumper Challenge, the $10,000 Marders Local Hunter Derby, and numerous hunter and children's and adult equitation classes for Long Island riders.

The sole competitions on Monday will be for riders with disabilities, starting at 10 a.m. Also that day, adoptable dogs and cats will be in the children's area from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and adoptable horses will be in Hunter Ring 2 from noon to 1.

Tuesday's events are to include $10,000 open jumper classes, a $10,000 7-and-under jumper class, and competitions for amateur and junior jumpers. Amateur, junior, and open jumpers, as well as hunters, are to be featured Wednesday, and next Thursday jumper competition begins in earnest with the $37,000 Speed Stake and the $10,000 Citarella Open Jumper class, as well as other jumper and hunter classes.

The main event on Friday, Sept. 2, will be the $74,000 Douglas Elliman Grand Prix Qualifier. On Sept. 3, Kids Day, there will be free pony rides for children under 12, and on the show's final day, Sept. 4, some of the world's top riders are to vie in the Classic Grand Prix, which this year has a $410,000 purse, the largest ever.
