Parrish 'Perspectives' Now Open

Fri, 05/24/2019 - 13:16
Robert Dash, an artist who also wrote a long-running column in The Star, is one of the artists featured in the Parrish Art Museum's "Perspectives" show.

Just like the buds on the trees and the first stirrings of crocuses and snowdrops this weekend, the winter hibernation of the South Fork art scene showed signs of abatement.

At the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, three shows under the heading of "Perspectives," quick takes on artists who work or have worked on the East End, opened with receptions on Saturday and Sunday. The show features installations of three artists: Robert Dash, Jules Feiffer, and Joe Zucker.

The Dash exhibition is a celebration and remembrance of the artist, who died in 2013 after spending some 50 years at Madoo, his home, studio, and garden in Sagaponack. "Theme and Variations" explores the artist's last works, which took a 1972 lithograph of Sagg Main Street and turned into a multi-year exploration of the subject through drawings and paintings related to the scene.

Mr. Feiffer shows drawings related to his latest book, "Kill My Mother." In addition to drawings from the book, he has created new pieces specifically for the show that explain its narrative to those in the gallery.

Mr. Zucker offers a fuller exploration of a series, "Life and Times of an Orb Weaver," related to the study and depiction of spiders. There are paintings, prints, and 20 drawings, some of which have been donated to the museum by a collector and others that the artist rediscovered in conjunction with the exhibition.

This exhibition was done with brief lead time to promote spontaneity and immediacy and will be up only through April 26, a brief blip in the museum's schedule.
