Charlie Kaufman, left, participated in a post-screening discussion with his co-director Duke Johnson and Tom Noonan, who voiced a majority of the characters in the film.

Charlie Kaufman’s latest film, “Anomalisa,” had its east coast premiere on Friday night at the Hamptons International Film Festival, and an eager crowd lined up and braved the threat of rain and then a lightning strike that caused a brief power outage to get a first look.

The stop-motion animation film was based on a radio play that Mr. Kaufman worked on with the cast previously. Making it was a matter of translating material that was meant to highlight its aural qualities into a fuller visual experience.

Mr. Kaufman said in a Q&A session after the screening with Mr. Noonan and fellow director Duke Johnson that from the beginning, they always knew it would be in stop-motion animation. Yet, several choices, such as keeping the lines on the puppets' faces, evolved over time. The cast of the movie includes David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tom Noonan as every other voice in the film.

Carter Burwell, who lives in Amagansett, scored the film and was part of the creative team for the radio play.

The screening on Friday was the only one for this film at the festival.
