Amagansett

An employee of the Sportime recreational facility on Abraham’s Path reported Friday afternoon that “someone suspicious” had called there inquiring whether the Retreat had a location on that road. The employee, who did not provide any details to the caller, reported the name on the caller ID to police, who contacted the Retreat to inform them of the incident.

Montauk

A Marine Patrol officer noticed a gutter hanging off the roof of the comfort station building on South Lake Drive on Feb. 25. The Parks Department came and fixed it.

Napeague

A passer-by called in a report of illegal dumping on Route 27 in front of the Ocean Vista Resort. An officer found that someone had tossed an old dog bed onto the shoulder of the westbound lane, and called upon the State Highway Department — 27 is a state road — for removal.

Sag Harbor

Michael Hayes accidentally dropped his car key down a Marsden Street storm drain on the afternoon of Feb. 26, and called police for help. An officer attempted to use a magnetic tool to fish it out, but was unsuccessful. Mr. Hayes opted to leave his car and said he’d call the Public Works Department directly the next day.

That same day, an employee of the Sag Harbor Cinema reported being the victim of an email scam that led to the deposit of a paycheck of more than $1,000 into an account that wasn’t hers. The money has since been recovered.

Still later that day, a few minutes before midnight, an officer patrolling Long Wharf discovered that a car had smashed into a wooden guardrail. Surveillance camera footage revealed that the damage was caused by a driver who, the very next day but in an unrelated incident, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

On Main Street in front of the Variety Store, late in the afternoon of Feb. 28, Robert Falborn discovered a money clip containing at least $899 in cash on the ground between his car and the one next to it. Earlier, he told police, he’d seen a man get out of the car and attend to a young child in the back seat. Mr. Falborn turned the money over to the police; the wife of the man who’d dropped the clip showed up a little later to claim it.

In high winds last Thursday morning, the American flag usually flying over Marine Park on Bay Street apparently snapped free of its line. A police officer found it on the ground nearby and took it in for safekeeping.

Springs

Anyone missing a Kia car key in Springs should check with the East Hampton Town Police Department. Lynn Mendelman found such a key on Three Mile Harbor-Hog Creek Road last Thursday morning and turned it in.

Billy Carmen’s 19-foot boat trailer was nearly towed away from Louse Point on the evening of Feb. 23 when a Marine Patrol officer came upon it and thought it had been abandoned. Paul Lester was the one who told the police that it belonged to Mr. Carmen, who was out fishing at the time.

Two days later, police impounded a blue kayak that was sitting on the town trustees’ kayak rack at Louse Point without the necessary seasonal permit.

Village's Newest Cop Is 'One of Our Own'

A smattering of news involving the village's Police and Emergency Services Departments came out of an East Hampton Village Board meeting that was otherwise focused on avoiding the need for residents to call the police for noise complaints in the historic district.

On Pantigo Road near Bostwick’s, a 38-year-old man who appeared to be intoxicated was questioned by police on the afternoon of April 7. He said he wasn’t causing trouble, just canvassing businesses looking for work. Police drove him back to his house. Eight days before, the same man had been seen opening a storage shed and walk-in cooler behind Rowdy Hall in Amagansett, and he was later accused of taking 20 containers of beer and four containers of iced tea. According to the official report, petty larceny charges may be pending.
