There were no surprises in the East Hampton Village election on Tuesday. Mayor Jerry Larsen, Chris Minardi, the deputy mayor, and Sandra Melendez, another village trustee, all ran unopposed and were re-elected to four-year terms.

Flamingo Endures on Georgica Pond

As of Tuesday afternoon, the American flamingo that first appeared at Georgica Pond on May 31 continued to draw bird lovers to East Hampton. In just the last week, over 100 birders trekked down the beach to view the bird and submit lists to eBird.

Kids Culture for June 20, 2024

A Great Race All Around on Shelter Island

Ryan Fowkes, who is racing royalty when it comes to the East End running community, capped his 2024 competitive season with a third-place overall finish in the Shelter Island 10K on Saturday. The top women's division finisher was Angie Rafter of Vernon, Conn., whose photo finish was called "really exciting" by the race director.

Little League: Race Lane Outhit, but Not Outdone

Benefiting from an over-the-pitch-limit ruling that had resulted in Smile Navy Beach having to forfeit a seeming semifinal playoff win, the Amagansett Fire Department’s 11-and-12-year-old Little League team nevertheless acquitted itself well in a 7-5 loss to Race Lane in the Major League championship game played at Stephen Hand’s Path on June 10.

Long Island Shows Up for Beacon of Hope 5K

Hours before the start of the Shelter Island 10K on Saturday, the Beacon of Hope 5K run/walk in Montauk kicked off as another successful fund-raiser for the Coalition for Women’s Cancers, drawing runners from all over Long Island, New York, and New Jersey to a race boasting some of the best views around.

Tour the Folly Arboretum in Springs

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society has organized a moderate hike of slightly more than two miles on Wednesday that will include a private tour of the Folly Tree Arboretum in Springs.

Montauk's Music on the Green Rocks On

Classic Cars at the Bridgehampton Museum

Historic cars can be seen on the grounds of the Bridgehampton Museum’s Nathaniel Rogers House from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in a show called “Fast Company.” Aside from the full-size cars, you can check out slot car races on a custom track designed to match the old raceway at the Bridge.

Into the Past in Wainscott

Part of a new series from the Wainscott Heritage Project, on Saturday at the Wainscott Chapel, Geoff Gehman, a journalist and author, will go "Beyond the Kingdom: Wainscott 1.0 and 2.5." Starting at 10 a.m., he will dive into the past by way of his memories of life here in the 1960s and 1970s, from Norman Jaffe architecture to the Georgica Association to Truman Capote.

Pine Beetle Scourge Fans Fears of Fire

The end-times landscaping job wrought by the southern pine beetle along Montauk Highway in Amagansett could seem pretty compared to how it would look after a fire. “It’s a giant tinderbox out there,” said Chris Beckert, who is in his fourth year as chief of the Amagansett Fire Department.

Tired of Playing Nice, Town Removes Montauk Walkway

In a rare case of the Town of East Hampton removing an illegally built accessory structure, it took out a wooden walkway that connected a house on South Emerson Avenue in Montauk to the beach. According to the director of code enforcement, it was built without a permit and crossed over an easement seeded with beach grass meant to help prevent erosion.

Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike Redo Ahead

For East Hampton Teen, Third Time’s a Charm at Teeny Awards

Jadiel Rodriguez, an East Hampton High School junior who has been acting in community theater and school musicals since the age of 9, played Moonface Martin in "Anything Goes" this year. His performance earned him a Teeny Award — the eastern Suffolk high school version of Broadway’s Tony Awards, sponsored by East End Arts.
