A Sunday in fall. This Sunday, in fact. A perfect time for a jaunty ferry ride over to Shelter Island for a book talk. But not just any book talk, one by Lance Richardson on his new one, which is reviewed in The Star this week, "True Nature: The Pilgrimage of Peter Matthiessen" — the late Sagaponack novelist, naturalist, and Zen Buddhist teacher.

This is at the island's Ram's Head Inn and involves, an invitation promises, "an intimate conversation between" Mr. Richardson and Alex Matthiessen, the author's son and the president of the Peter Matthiessen Center, an environmental advocacy group.

The start time is 5 p.m. and the cost is $75, which "includes starter, entree, dessert, and a glass of wine. Books will be available for purchase and signing."

For the Tom Twomey Series

Can't swing that one? At the East Hampton Library on Saturday at 3 p.m., the Tom Twomey lecture series will host, yes, Lance Richardson, for "Biography as Pilgrimage: On the Trail of Peter Matthiessen." The free talk will take place in the Baldwin Family Lecture Room. Reservations on the library's website are requested but not required.
