Wintertime Hikes and More Outdoors

Fri, 03/04/2022 - 10:32

Adults and kids alike can get some fresh air this weekend with hikes and other activities.

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will lead a moderately paced three-mile hike to Amsterdam Beach State Park on Saturday at 10 a.m., passing through moorlands on the way to the ocean bluffs. The meeting place is at the Amsterdam Beach parking lot on the south side of Route 27, at Ranch Road. Foods and liquids are suggested. Rick Whalen will lead the hike and can be reached for more information at 631-275-8359 or [email protected].

Andy Sabin, the president of the South Fork Natural History Museum's board of directors, will lead an all-ages hunt for the blue-spotted salamander around Montauk's vernal ponds on Saturday evening at 7:30. Flashlights and boots are recommended. The walk will be canceled if it is too dry for salamanders. The fee is $15 for adults, $10 for children. Members can take part for free. The number to call to reserve a place and make sure it's soggy enough is 631-237-0294.

LeighAnn Montaglione, an educator with the museum, will take kids 10 and older on a nature exploration in the Walking Dunes on Napeague on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. She'll teach hikers about the ecosystem, the forces that shaped it, and why it's important. On Sunday at 10 a.m., Sandra Reyes, another SoFo educator, will lead kids 6 to 8 on an "interactive migration survival game," teaching them about the dangers migrating birds face. This program will be held at the museum in Bridgehampton. The cost for each is $10 for kids, $15 for adults. Museum members can join in for free. Registration is at sofo.org.
