First Debate for Town Races Is Monday

The East Hampton Group for Good Government will host a debate among the candidates for supervisor and town board on Monday at 7 p.m.

The five candidates for town board will debate at 7 p.m. They are Councilwoman Kathee Burke-Gonzalez, who is seeking a third term, and Cate Rogers, the former chairwoman of the East Hampton Democratic Committee, both running on the Democratic and Working Families Party lines; George Aman and Joe Karpinski, running on the Republican and Conservative Party tickets, and John Whelan, chairman of the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals, who is endorsed by the East Hampton Independence Party.

At 7:45, candidates for supervisor will debate. They are Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc, the Democratic and Working Families Party-endorsed candidate who is seeking a third term; Ken Walles, his Republican and Conservative Party challenger, and Councilman Jeff Bragman, on the Independence Party ticket.

The debate will be broadcast live on LTV’s Channel 20 and on LTV’s YouTube channel, and subsequently will be accessible on demand at ltveh.org and ehggg.org. Those who would like to suggest questions for the candidates have been asked to send them in an email to [email protected] by noon on Sunday.

A Call to Rein in Chain Stores in Sag Harbor

Residents of Sag Harbor have come together to denounce what some see as a troubling wave of chain stores. A petition launched by Save Sag Harbor that calls for new legislation to define and limit “formula retail” or “chain establishments” in the village has been signed by over 500 people in the last week.

GeekHampton Moves West

After 15 years in Sag Harbor, GeekHampton, which sells and services Apple products, will close on Tuesday at 6 p.m. It will reopen on May 4 in Hampton Bays.

This Thomas Dering and John Hulbert letter had to do with issuing permits of return to those who’d fled Long Island during the British occupation, which is also the topic of the next Tom Twomey lecture Friday night at the East Hampton Library.
