Springs Notebook: Pre-K Is Out of This World

Springs prekindergartners had a blast learning about space recently.

Rocket ships, astronaut helmets, and command centers are some of the things students the Springs School prekindergarten program created recently. Beverly McGrath, Meghan Lydon and Liana Morales’s classes returned to Earth from an exciting space mission last week.

The class learned about the moon and outer space and did many activities to display their knowledge. For example, to reflect on their lesson about the moon, the children made a paper-plate moon, which had textured materials to show the mountains and craters on the moon. The kids were ecstatic to learn about the wonders beyond this atmosphere, and now they are eager to share what they learned with the community.

“The students seemed interested in learning about space, so that’s why we  did this unit,” said Ms. McGrath. “My favorite part personally was building our rocket ship.” Their rocket ship was made with apple sauce caps, bottle tops, cardboard, and other recycled materials.

“I really liked going to outer space,” said Amalia, a prekindergartner. Two other students, Kelly and Nolan, also like the rocket ship and their moon project.

Meghan Lydon’s class went about things a little bit differently. They made planets and aliens. A student named Asher earned the nickname Asher-tronaut during the unit.

Ms. Morales  and her students had a different approach on their rocket ship. They made a rocket ship tent with a command center inside. “I really liked the rocket ship tent,” said a student named Haley, while Ruby, Lucy, and Rio liked making a sun, moon, and stars project.
