A new year and a new month bring a new theme for the Springs School Diversity Club and its members.

The theme for January is “being of service.” This means the club is going to give back to the community. The Diversity Club will work hard every week to create small gifts: making jewelry, crocheting gifts, and writing inspirational quotes on paper, as well as organizing lunches for the homeless community at Maureen’s Haven in Riverhead.

The sixth-grade special education teacher Victoria Firemark runs the club and said she chose the theme “in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I felt it was important to give people the opportunity to learn about him and his day of service. The group and I are trying to give everyone an opportunity to be of service, whether at home, at school, or in the community. The lunches and little gifts are going to the people who are served by Maureen’s Haven, the homeless community.”

Ms. Firemark also explained that sometimes the students choose the theme, but other times she chooses it. The Diversity Club and Journalism Club remind the Springs community that it’s never too late to do something kind to serve our community. It will help keep Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream alive.
