Junior Sailing Program Begins

The Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor is once again hosting weekly sailing clinics for kids this summer, with sessions that started this week and continue through Labor Day.

The program is for kids 6 to 17, who may “find it beneficial to enroll in multiple sessions” depending on age and skill level, Breakwater recommends on its website. Morning and afternoon sessions are available.

“Students start by learning the basics of sailing, including how to rig a boat and what to do when it capsizes,” the club says. “They also learn how a boat responds to wind before they experience this concept firsthand on the water by running land drills, games, and practice in the B.Y.C. land boat.”

Life jackets will be provided in case a student doesn’t have one of his or her own. Each day, participants should take a “gear bag” with sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, flip-flops or water shoes, a towel, a change of clothes, and drinking water in a reusable bottle. More details and a link to register are online at breakwateryachtclub.theclubspot.com.
