Jack Perna, the longtime district superintendent and principal of the Montauk School, has announced that he will retire in June after more than 40 years of service to the district.

Calling him a “guardian of the children of this community,” the Montauk School Board said in an announcement on Tuesday that it has “unending gratitude” for Mr. Perna’s contributions as a teacher and administrator. “He has played such an integral part in the history of Montauk School and his presence will be sorely missed.”

The district has officially kicked off a search for its next chief administrator. “We understand the need for community input during this process and will be reaching out to various stakeholder groups for input and participation,” the school board said.
