East Hampton Gym Closes

The East Hampton Gym in East Hampton Village, which had been in business for 23 years, has permanently closed, the owners of the Hamptons Gym Corp., which also operates Sag Harbor and Southampton gyms, announced last week. The owners cited the ongoing pandemic and state regulations for safely operating a gym as the reasons.

“It has become harder and harder for businesses such as ours to remain viable,” they said in an email to members. “We have chosen to consolidate and focus on our Southampton and Sag Harbor locations in the interests of continuing long-term operations.”

Those whose memberships originated at the East Hampton branch can use the Sag Harbor Gym instead.

Shop-Local Holidays

The East Hampton Chamber of Commerce is organizing a holiday shopping campaign to help local merchants. Residents have been encouraged to shop at small businesses on Nov. 28, a national shopping day known as Small Business Saturday, and shopkeepers have been advised to offer online discounts on merchandise and services on Cyber Monday, Nov. 30.

“Cyber Monday is now the biggest shopping day of the year, surpassing even Black Friday,” the Chamber of Commerce said in a release. The chamber is also promoting Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1, as a day for donating to local nonprofits.

“The fourth quarter is a critical time for many businesses,” said Glenn O. Vickers, the chamber’s president. “Leveraging established national campaigns that align with historical consumer spending trends only helps drive economic recovery efforts for small businesses.” Businesses seeking to participate in the holiday campaigns can register on the Chamber of Commerce’s website.
