The Art Scene 05.22.25

John Haubrich’s layered mixed-media “Pay to Play” will be on view at Haubrich Art in Springs.

New Gallery in East Hampton

Sorrel Sky Gallery, which has locations in SoHo, Santa Fe, N.M., and Durango, Colo., has opened an outpost at 58 Park Place in East Hampton with an exhibition of photographs by David Yarrow.

Born in Scotland, Mr. Yarrow had an early career as a photographer for The London Times. After subsequent decades in finance he returned to photography in 2014. His subjects have included the natural world and sporting icons, but in recent years he has shifted toward using his camera to tell stories. One such was shot in a ghost town in Montana, where, with the proprietor’s permission, he photographed a wolf walking down the center of the bar.

Fragments in Two Mediums

“Fragments,” a show of collages by John Haubrich and ceramics by Ted Tyler, will open at HaubrichArt, 39 Isle of Wight Road in Springs, with a reception Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Mr. Haubrich uses a mixture of collage and painting in both his small and large works, creating multilayered surfaces with paper, image transfer, and oil. Mr. Tyler has a distinct interpretation of ceramics, reflecting his belief that accidents can create beautiful and dramatic pieces.

After the opening, the gallery will be open through June 14 by appointment only, via email to [email protected].

Big Show at the Depot

The Depot Art Gallery in Montauk opens for the season Thursday with “The End I,” an exhibition of work by more than 70 members of the Montauk Artists Association. The works are “incredibly diverse in their subject matters, styles, techniques, and mediums,” according to the gallery.

A reception will be held Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m., and the show will run through June 2.

Inspired by Nature

“Something Lost, Something Gained,” a show of works by four artists whose work is driven by the natural environment, will open at the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Sag Harbor on Saturday, with a reception from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Monica Banks is known for her ceramic birds and other creatures as well as her cloud sculptures that sparkle with detritus. Laurie Lambrecht’s photography-based embroideries examine moss, lichen, and texture on tree bark.

Francine Fleischer will show photographs of found bird nests made from a variety of materials including seagrass, twigs, cigarette wrappers, even human hair. Scott Bluedorn will be represented by a work made from found bark on which the borings of southern pine beetles have created an intricate pattern.

The exhibition will run through June 30.

From Boats to Art

Jude Amsel, a photographer, ceramicist, and glass artist, has taken over the space formerly occupied by Jack’s Marine at 188 North Ferry Road on Shelter Island to open Maju, a new art gallery.

Its inaugural exhibition, “Mixed Bag on Paper,” which will open Saturday with a reception from 3 to 6 p.m., has been organized by Dan Welden, the master printmaker and painter. It will continue through June 30.

The show includes work by Mr. Bluedorn, William Broich, Roz Dimon, Laurie Dolphin, Alex Ferrone, Justin Greenwald, Carol Hunt, Elaine de Kooning, Bruce Lieberman, Roy Nicholson, Charlene Ortiz, Ellen Peckham, Wendy Prellwitz, Simona Prives, Doug Reina, Barry Stern, Ted Thirlby, Ellen Wiener, and Mr. Welden.

Two Painters

The Grenning Gallery in Sag Harbor will open an exhibition of paintings by Kelly Carmody and Nelson H. White on Saturday, with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Rooted in realism, Ms. Carmody’s recent paintings begin with traditional subjects and compositions, but her lively, expressive brushwork creates a tension between flatness and depth that recalls the work of Matisse and Bonnard.

Mr. White treats natural landscapes with loose brushstrokes, using impasto and texture to communicate atmosphere. In “Dering Harbor 07.30.2022,” for example, the movement in the sky made by a palette knife translates to windy, overcast weather.

The show will remain on view through June 15.

Perception and Form

The Women's Art Center of the Hamptons in Bridgehampton will open "Shape Shifters," a group show that explores the connections among perception, emotion, and form, with a reception Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m.

Showcasing works by Polly Barton, Roisin Bateman, Eva Faye, Donna Green, and Joyce Parcher, the exhibition invites viewers to consider how shapes, whether abstract or defined, can alter how we see, feel, and understand the world around us.

"Shape Shifters" will run through June 22.

"Smorgasbord" at Firestone

"Smorgasbord," a group exhibition of contemporary artists celebrating variety and difference, will open Friday at Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m.

The artists whose works are on view in this cross-generational exhibition are unafraid to mix and collide referents, mediums, materials, inspirations, and motifs, creating densely layered artworks reflecting a diversity of experiences, according to the gallery.

The show will remain on view through June 22.

Season Opener

“Season Kickoff,” a large group exhibition, opens Thursday at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor and will remain through June 12. A reception is set for Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Among the more than 30 artists are Michael Albert, Adriana Barone, Casey Chalem Anderson, Christopher Engel, Barbara Groot, Ruby Jackson, Lauren Matzen, Veronica Mezzina, Christina Schlesinger, and Roger Sichel.

“Long Weekend”

Harper’s Gallery in East Hampton will open “Long Weekend,” an appropriately named exhibition given the holiday, with a reception Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The show includes a curated selection of works by gallery artists and others, as well as a hand-picked collection of framed posters that will be on view in the bookshop. It will continue through July 2.

Painting in the Garden

Barbara Thomas, a Springs artist with extensive teaching experience, will lead Evening Painting in the Gardens, a plein-air painting class, Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton.

Participants have been invited to take a snack, drink, picnic blanket — even a child, 12 and older. While LongHouse provides the materials, artists can take their own.

Tickets are $45, $35 for members.

Paintings and Jewelry

“Boys Wanna to Get With Me, Girls Wanna to Get With Me,” a show of new paintings by Sandy Cohen, will open Saturday at the Stella Flame Gallery in Bridgehampton and continue through June 15.

The artist’s work often refers to Disney and Tex Avery, but her cartoon characters and the messages that are sometimes scrawled on the paintings reflect current social conditions, says the gallery.

A trunk show of jewelry by Pinar Hakim will open June 7, when a reception for both exhibitions will be held between 5 and 7 p.m.
