Art and Cookies

Families planning to check out the Student Arts Festival at Guild Hall this weekend might also take advantage of the other offerings at the museum: art workshops on Saturday and a Valentine’s Day cookie decorating workshop on Sunday.

Alexandra McCourt will teach free workshops for kids in kindergarten through fifth grade on Saturday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and from 3 to 4. Each will include a different art project relating to the student exhibition. Each class is limited to 25 students.

On Sunday, Citarella will provide the frosting and candy as kids 3 to 12 decorate heart-shaped cookies. The cost is $8, $6 for members. There will be space for just 30 participants, so advance registration is required.

On Wednesday, Montauk School eighth graders will present “Word Up!” — an evening of poetry — at 7 in the John Drew Theater. Students will read their own poems and work by published poets, and recite memorized poems and writing by fellow students. Reservations have been requested.

Blubber Gloves

At the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton on Saturday, families with kids 6 and older will learn firsthand how marine mammals deal with cold winter waters. In the 10:30 a.m. workshop, families will make their own “blubber gloves” and then try them out. Those who attend should dress for a mess.

On Friday, Feb. 10, the museum will venture outside at 6:30 p.m. for a full-moon family hike. Advance registration is requested for both programs.

Comin’ Down the Track

Youngsters 2 to 5 who stop in at the Wharf Shop in Sag Harbor on Saturday morning may receive a free personalized wooden rail car. The giveaway will run from 10 a.m. until the toys are gone.

Doodle Machine

At the Parrish Art Museum, where the 2017 Student Exhibition fills galleries this month, there are also free Friday evening family programs. In a workshop tomorrow from 6 to 8, families will make drawing machines called Doodle Bots, using found materials and small motors. On Friday, Feb. 10, the museum will show the film “Underwater Dreams,” about the sons of an undocumented Mexican immigrant who triumph in a robotics competition over a Massachusetts Institute of Technology team. The film is best for families with children 10 and older. It will be shown at 6 p.m.

Advance registration is suggested for both programs.

At the Libraries

At the libraries this week kids can make paper artworks, huggable Valentines, works on canvas, and bath bombs, take in a movie, or join in a teen trivia contest.

A cardinal hand-print workshop for ages 4 and up will be held at the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton tomorrow at 4 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 10, at the same hour, they can paint Valentine bouquets.

Inspired by Peter Reynolds’s book “Ish,” kids 3 to 5 will create crumpled paper art at the John Jermain Memorial Library in Sag Harbor on Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday night from 6 to 8, it’s teen trivia for grades 7 through 12. People can come as a team or form one there. Pizza will be served.

Children 6 and up will use different techniques and materials to decorate an 8-by-10 canvas on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Montauk Library.

In East Hampton, the family movie this afternoon at 4 is “The Princess and the Frog.” Next Thursday’s movie, at the same time, is “Diary of a Wimpy Kid 3: Dog Days.”

Tomorrow, children 5 and older can use natural materials to make pretty-smelling bath bombs from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Valentine pillows will be the craft of the day during a workshop on Wednesday from 4 to 5 p.m. for kids 4 and older.

Advance registration has been suggested.

Winter Break

For parents and children looking ahead to the winter break and wondering what to do with all that time, among the options to consider are a free morning recreation program offered through East Hampton Town Parents and Camp SoulGrow workshops at Gurney’s Resort in Montauk.

The town program, for kindergarten through sixth grade, will be at the John M. Marshall Elementary School or the Montauk School from Feb. 21 through 24, 9 a.m. to noon each day. Registration is at the schools the first day of the program.

Camp SoulGrow’s workshops, for kids 7 and older, will take place Feb. 20 through 24 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Among the activities are yoga, swimming, sewing, target practice, dance, and arts and crafts. Registration is at [email protected].

Little League

Kids in third through seventh grade who are planning to play Little League will need to be evaluated on catching, throwing, batting, fielding, and running prior to the start of the season. Evaluations will be held at the Sportime Arena in Amagansett on Feb. 11 and March 4; registration is at eteamz.com/EHLL.

Older kids in fifth through seventh grade will be evaluated the first day, with softball players asked to show up at 1 p.m. and baseball players at 1:45. Kids will make their way through five stations, which should take about two hours.

The March 4 schedule for players in third and fourth grades is the same: softball at 1 p.m., baseball at 1:45. Makeup evaluations for kids unable to attend the earlier sessions will be on March 11. Questions can be emailed to [email protected].

For the Birds

Children 3 to 6 can make their own citrus birdfeeders at the Children’s Museum of the East End on Saturday at 10 a.m. The workshop costs $20 including museum admission; $5 for museum members. Advance sign-up is a must.
