Last-Minute Beach Getaways Made Easier

Last-Minute Beach Getaways Made Easier

One Night, a hotel booking app, offers the lowest possible rates for a given night
By
Jackie Pape

As daunting as it may seem to book a last-minute stay on the East End, one smartphone app is making it both possible and more affordable.

One Night, a hotel booking app, offers the lowest possible rates for a given night by capitalizing on unbooked rooms in select hotels across the country. Now, with a recent expansion to the South Fork, anyone with the One Night app can book a stay in hotels from Southampton to Montauk, and even on Shelter Island.

“One Night’s expansion to the Hamptons has seen great support from both our guests and hotel partners,” said Amar Lalvani, the C.E.O. and managing partner of Standard International, the group behind One Night. “Excitement is building for the new style of travel that One Night has brought to this area, making it easier for both locals and travelers to be spontaneous.”

Although One Night officially launched in September 2016, it originated from an app initially designed exclusively by and for the Standard Hotels, which have locations in New York, Miami, and California. In an effort to make use of what would otherwise become dead inventory, the Standard would list unbooked rooms at cheaper prices for single-night stays. After seeing great returns, Standard International launched One Night, expanding the same last-minute service to non-Standard hotels.

Realizing that New York was one of the biggest markets sought after on the One Night app — for people traveling and for those seeking a one-night staycation — the Hamptons seemed like the next logical step for the app.

Among the East End hotels on the app are the Chequit on Shelter Island, Gurney’s Montauk Resort, Hero Beach Club Resort in Montauk, the Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton, the Montauk Beach House, the Surf Lodge, and the Latch Pop Up Inn in Southampton. While hotel bookings on One Night generally open at 3 p.m., Hamptons’ guests can book each day beginning at noon. This change was added to better accommodate travelers coming from New York City. Although the app is in the mind-set of staying last minute, users can book up to two consecutive nights when they are available.

Unlike general booking and travel sites, One Night was designed to accommodate both the hotel and the consumer. “For us, it’s great for weekday business, and it provides the clientele we are looking for,” said Nicole Desormiers, the hotel manager at the Surf Lodge.

Each of the hotels also provides its own 24-hour guide that includes suggestions of restaurants and attractions for guests.

While rates differ every day depending on availability, Ms. Desormiers said that for the Surf Lodge rates on One Night are typically discounted by 20 percent.

Since arriving on the East End, One Night has also expanded to Boston and Washington, D.C. Its list of cities also includes Austin, Tex., Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco.

Goop, a lifestyle brand founded by the actress Gwyneth Paltrow, will open a summer pop-up in Amagansett on Saturday.

Located at 145 Main Street in a 100-year-old cottage, goop MRKT (yes, that’s goop with a lower-case G) will be stocked with home and fashion goods, which will include resort, swim, beauty, and wellness items. “The design concept revolves around a general store re-imagined as goop’s summer residence, inspired by the idyllic, and slightly eccentric, estates and gardens of the English seaside,” according to a release.

The shop will be open through Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. And who knows, shoppers at the market may just run into Ms. Paltrow herself; she has a house in Amagansett.

Multimillion-dollar houses, lush gardens, and crystal-clear pools are ubiquitous in much of the Hamptons, and a new magazine promises to showcase some of the architects and interior, landscape, and pool designers who create them. The magazine is called End and it will present East End Design Awards in 12 categories. Submissions are due by Friday, July 7.

“Basically, it’s an awards program for interesting design on the East End,” said Levi Shaw-Faber, the producer of the magazine. “There is an independent panel of judges who are really top designers in their respective fields.”

The judges come from three nationally known firms: Deborah Berke Partners, Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors, and Coen+Partners, which have each won a National Design Award from the Cooper-Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Deborah Berke Partners, which is based in Manhattan, is noted for the Rockefeller Art Center at the State University at Fredonia, the interiors of the 432 Park Avenue building in New York City, and innumerable houses, including many on the East End. Ms. Berke is the dean of the Yale School of Architecture.

Roman and Williams Buildings and Interiors is also New York based. It specializes in “blending historical elements with modern references,” according to the End magazine website. Listed among Architectural Digest’s top 100 designers, it has designed a residence for Gwyneth Paltrow, the James Beard restaurant Le Coucou, and the lobbies of Hotel Emma and the Standard Hotel.

Coen+Partners is a landscape architecture firm based in Minneapolis, which has been commissioned by universities, public libraries, and city parks among other institutions, as well as having designed landscapes for private residences.

“All of the judges judge all of the projects,” Mr. Shaw-Faber said. “For instance, landscape architects will look at interior design.”

Award-winners and honorable mentions will be given at least one full page in End, with larger projects receiving a two-page spread. The magazine will be inserted in The East Hampton Star and also distributed separately from Southampton to Montauk.

The categories to be judged include: New single-family house under and over 5,000 square feet; non-residential project (retail, gallery, restaurant, hotel, inn, nightclub, museum, school, etc.); unbuilt architectural project; green intervention; residential kitchen, bathroom, living room, and art space in a residence, and outdoor living space, landscape, garden, or pool.

The entry fee for each submission is $150 and multiple submissions will be accepted. Submissions are to include a horizontal photo of the work or project, its title, and up to 150 words describing it. Winners will be invited to an awards event on Aug. 24, and will receive an engraved trophy. Further information is on the magazine’s website: eastenddesignawards.com.
