Schenck Fuels Services, a family-owned East Hampton company that has provided oil supply and home heating services to residents of the town since 1902, was sold on Friday to the Star Group, a publicly traded corporation based in Stamford, Conn.

The Star Group, through its subsidiary Petro Home Services, provides home heating products and services to residential and commercial customers from Maine to Georgia, including multiple towns on Long Island.

Anthony Silecchia, a vice president of operations and acquisitions at the Star Group, said that Chris Schenck and Rodney Herrlin, the current owners of Schenck Fuels, would no longer be involved with the company. Neither Mr. Schenck nor Mr. Herrlin responded to requests for comment.

Customers of Schenck Fuels can expect business as usual, said Joseph McDonald, a senior vice president of sales and marketing at the Star Group. "There won't be much of a transition," he said. "We want to keep the business running as is." The new owner is planning to invest more resources into the business, he said.

Mr. Silecchia said it was Schenck Fuels commitment to its community that made it an attractive acquisition. "The customers are neighbors, and that's the kind of business that fits with us," he said.

The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The recent sale of a group of commercial and residential properties on Main Street in Sag Harbor has left the shopkeepers who lease space in the buildings worried about being priced out of business by rising rents.

The assemblage of three contiguous properties, which was listed with Saunders and Associates in April, contains six retail stores, including the Country Lane gift shop and the Ethel and Rowe children’s store, both located on Main Street, and two single-family residences on Division Street, one of which houses the Scarlett Rose salon. It includes four second-floor apartments or office spaces with a shared roof deck, and a vacant lot on Washington Street that can be developed for commercial use.

The seller, Julia Hyman, who has owned the properties for decades, listed them with an asking price of just under $12 million. They are now in contract to be purchased by Manhattan Skyline Management, a division of a New York City real estate development firm owned by Donald Zucker. Mr. Zucker’s portfolio of East End properties includes 7 Main Street in Sag Harbor, the site of Provisions Natural Food Market and Cafe, and the East Hampton movie theater building. Joshua Roth, a vice president at the company, said that he expected the sale to close in November.

The pending transfer in ownership has frustrated shopkeepers, who have not had the chance to discuss the status of their leases with their future landlord. “I don’t even know if I’ll have the opportunity to stick around. I know nothing,” said Vanessa Hamer, who opened Ethel and Rowe nearly two years ago. Her business is currently at a standstill, she said, because she is unable to place most of her merchandise orders until she knows what the future holds. “I needed to have ordered stuff a month ago to be able to get my merchandise in for next spring and summer,” she said. “Some vendors have been willing to work with me, in case I can’t actually take those orders, but other vendors have not.”

Mr. Roth said that his company will not officially own the properties until November, and is therefore not in a position to discuss lease terms.

Annie Kim, the owner of the Scarlett Rose salon, said she is worried about being able to find an alternate space for her business if her lease is not renewed or if the rent becomes too high. “We’ve been here for seven years now, and Sag Harbor is such a small town, there’s not many options,” she said.

The shopkeepers’ anxiety about the sale, said Ms. Hamer, is representative of a growing unease about whether rising rents will force many of Sag Harbor’s locally owned stores out of business.

“Speaking with business owners who’ve been here longer than I have, they all seem distressed about what’s going to happen to Sag Harbor,” said Ms. Hamer. “Is it going to become like East Hampton and Southampton, all the rents will go up and only super corporate retail companies are going to be able to afford it?”

That concern was echoed by Gwen Waddington, who with her mother, Nada Barry, owns the Wharf Shop, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. “People love Sag Harbor because of the charm of the independent stores, many of which are operated by the owner,” said Ms. Waddington. “With the purchase of this large tract, we’re hoping that will not end, that they won’t raise the rents so high that individuals can’t afford it. I’m concerned that people are going to have a severe ending to their life’s work.”

Schenck Fuels Services, a family-owned East Hampton company that has provided fuel oil and home heating services to residents of the town since 1902, was sold on Friday to the Star Group, a publicly traded corporation based in Stamford, Conn. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Through its subsidiary Petro Home Services, the Star Group provides home heating products and services to residential and commercial customers from Maine to Georgia, including multiple towns on Long Island. Anthony Silecchia, a vice president of operations and acquisitions for the Star Group, said Schenck Fuels’ commitment to its community had made it an attractive acquisition. “The customers are neighbors, and that’s the kind of business that fits with us,” he said.

Chris Schenck and Rodney Herrlin, the owners of Schenck Fuels, will no longer be involved with the company, he said. Neither responded to requests for an interview. Joseph McDonald, a senior vice president of sales and marketing at the Star Group, said customers could expect business as usual. “There won’t be much of a transition. We want to keep the business running as is,” he said. The new owner, he said, is also planning to invest more resources in the company.

Percy Christian Schenck, the founder of Schenck Fuels, which was originally known as P.C. Schenck and Sons Fuel Oil, started out by expanding a grain and coal supply concern that had been started by his father. Percy Schenck passed control of the company to his son Kennell Schenck Sr., and the business was subsequently run by family members, including Kennell (Fritz) Schenck Jr., his sister, Susan, and her husband, Dick Herrlin.

“I am the fifth generation to own and operate this legacy,” wrote Mr. Herrlin in a post on a LinkedIn profile. “We have survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the recent recession, and an internal theft problem that would have devastated many.” The theft, in 2011, was the embezzlement of nearly half a million dollars by the company’s bookkeeper.

A representative of the Star Group confirmed on Tuesday that there would be no interruption in service for existing customers, who, she said, would receive details about the new owner by the end of the month. There will be one noteworthy change, however, at the business’s headquarters on Percy’s Way. The company, she said, will no longer sell gas on site.

It was a booming summer for East Hampton Village retail stores. According to shopkeepers and gallery owners, sales were strong even as soaring temperatures beckoned people to the beach.

“For us, the weather being hot like this is really good,” said Lorna Dreher, the owner of Bonne Nuit, a lingerie store, and Eres, a swimwear boutique. “We were busier than other summers, but we had a harder time staffing in August so that made it a little more hectic than normal.”

Colleen Moeller, who launched the children’s store Petit Blue over Memorial Day weekend, said that she had “over-exceeded expectations” for her first summer. “Our bookkeeper was here yesterday, and said these are great numbers,” said Ms. Moeller. The big sellers, she said, included the Wobbel board, which tests kids’ balancing abilities, and the Wonder Walker, which helps toddlers navigate their first steps.

At BookHampton, “The President Is Missing,” by Bill Clinton and James Patterson was the season’s most popular novel, said Carolyn Brody, the owner. At her store, “business started out strong, had a dip in late June to early July, but then it kept going really strong,” she said.

Even in the fine arts sector, business was robust. “This was probably the best summer I’ve had in five years,” said Terry Wallace, the owner of the Wallace Gallery. “There’s a lot more money around, the stock market’s doing good, and I’m hoping that, in the fall, the real estate market picks up,” he said. Kaytlin Nodine, an assistant at Gallery Valentine, which opened in a new space on Newtown Lane this summer, said that sales were strong there as well.

Valerie Smith, the owner of the Monogram Shop, said that her store had “good steady summer business. No surprises in my world, and most I’ve talked to say the same.”
