Visionary Art at Ashawagh
“Art of Imagination,” a group exhibition, will open at Ashawagh Hall in Springs with a reception Saturday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and continue through Wednesday. Participating artists, all of whom are connected with the online Visionary Art Gallery, are Brigid Marlin, France Garrido, Don Farrell, Olga Spiegel, Jean Pronovost, Liba Waring Stambollion, and Roku Sasaki.
New at Ille Arts
Ille Arts in Amagansett has partnered with the Sugar Hill Children’s Museum of Art and Storytelling to present the work of Damien Davis and Lina Puerta, two of the museum’s artists in residence. The show will open Friday with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. and continue through Sept. 3.
Mr. Davis’s collages combine recurring, brightly colored cut-out images of clocks, figures, Afro combs, peacock chairs, and geometric shapes, many of which allude to African-American and other cultures. Ms. Puerta creates textural forms and compositions from concrete, clay, resin, wood, fabric, chains, artificial foliage and moss, and other materials.
The Sugar Hill museum provides its Harlem neighborhood with a space for children and their families to engage with accomplished artists and storytellers.
Postwar Abstraction
The Eric Firestone Gallery in East Hampton will open “Montauk Highway III: Postwar Abstraction in the Hamptons” with a reception on Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. The show will run through Sept. 29.
The 34 artists represented include James Brooks, Elaine and Willem de Kooning, Jim Dine, Jane Freilicher, Ibram Lassaw, Conrad Marca-Relli, Joan Mitchell, Robert Motherwell, Louise Nevelson, Alfonso Ossorio, Miriam Schapiro, and Hedda Sterne.
“Paradise” at Fireplace Project
“Paradise,” an exhibition of work by Lee Relvas and Andrew Brischler, is on view at the Fireplace Project in Springs through Sept. 15. Ms. Relvas is showing new sculptural work that uses plywood, epoxy putty, wood filler, and polyurethane to create outlines of figures and objects that resemble drawings in space.
Mr. Brischler creates large-scale panels with colored pencil, graphite, and markers, many of which graphically transform words and phrases in styles that reference Op Art, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop, among others.
Robert Dash Landscapes
“Fields and Fences: Paintings 1998-99,” a selection of works by Robert Dash, is on view through Oct. 12 at the Madoo Conservancy, the public garden in Sagaponack founded by the artist 25 years ago.
The paintings in the series are indebted to Dash’s work from the 1960s and ’70s, before the land succumbed to development. While the more recent paintings retain some elements of the earlier work, “they mark a definitive departure into the world of expressionism and abstraction,” according to a release.
Dash himself, in “Notes From Madoo,” wrote, “Of course, there are the paintings of the field, but I am not interested much in paintings of vanished landscapes, and I loathe nostalgia.”
Taylor Slater in Montauk
“The Pink Coast,” a show of paintings by Taylor Slater, will open Friday at the Montauk Beach House with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. and continue through Aug. 26. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the New York Women’s Surf Film Festival, which will also happen at the motel this weekend. A silent auction will benefit Lonely Whale, a nonprofit dedicated to the elimination of single-use plastics that are imperiling whales and ocean fish.
Five at White Room
“Subtle Impact,” a group exhibition, is on view at the White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton through Sept. 8, with a reception set for Aug. 24 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Participating artists are Keith Ramsdell, who uses long-exposure photography; Thomas P. Raggio and David Skillicorn, abstract painters; Adam Umbach, who moves between abstraction and representation, and Susan Washington, whose paintings are inspired in part by runway fashion shows.
Watercolors at MM Fine Art
“Watercolors,” a group exhibition, will open at MM Fine Art in Southampton with a reception Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. The show, which will be on view through Aug. 25, includes work by Claudia Aronow, John Baeder, Lucy Cookson, Terry Elkins, Eric Fischl, Sean Friloux, Brooke Laughlin, Nancy Maloney, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth.
Three at Romany Kramoris
Paintings by Lianne Alcon, Herbert August, and Barbara Groot are on view from Thursday through Sept. 5 at Romany Kramoris Gallery in Sag Harbor. A reception will happen Saturday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Ms. Alcon’s expressionistic painting style is loose, incorporating swirling strokes and liberal brushwork. Although abstract, Mr. August’s work starts with a reference to a live model, a still life, or other realistic elements. Ms. Groot’s elegant sweeping line work is reminiscent of musical phrasing.
Birdhouse Show and Auction
A closing reception for the birdhouse exhibition and silent auction benefiting the Peconic Land Trust will take place at Bridge Gardens in Bridgehampton on Saturday afternoon from 4 to 6. More than two dozen local artists decorated or created the birdhouses. The winning bidders will be announced at 5:30.
Multimedia at Parrish
For its 2019 Platform exhibition, the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill will have OptoSonic Tea, a New York City artists’ collective, create a two-part project. OptoSonic Echoes, a multi-channel continuous sound installation located outside the museum’s north entrance, will run from Thursday through Oct. 31. OptoSonic Tea at the Parrish, a site-specific indoor/outdoor multimedia performance involving approximately 20 artists, will take place in September.
Cultural Tour
The Southampton Town Arts and Culture Committee tour bus will set out on Saturday morning at 10 for Napeague, where it will visit the Art Barge and then the Mabel and Victor D’Amico Studio and Archive. Before the bus leaves Southampton Town Hall, Shane Weeks, an artist and a founding member of the committee, will perform a traditional Shinnecock welcoming song. The tour will return to Town Hall at 2 p.m. Admission and transportation are free, but seating is limited and reservations will be accepted in the order received at [email protected].
Shelter Island Open Studios
Artists of Shelter Island, a community of professional artists who work together on various cultural events and exhibitions, will hold its 10th annual open studios event on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Sixteen artists will participate.
