July 16, 1920 - June 21, 2019

Mildred Doughty Granitz, a former director of publicity at Guild Hall, died at home in East Hampton on June 21. She was 98.

While living in New York in the 1940s, she was a reporter for Ladies Home Journal and Tide magazine. She later edited several cookbooks, including ones featuring recipes for international cuisine.

She married Robert Granitz on Feb. 9, 1946, and the couple raised three children.

After spending nine years in Atlanta, they moved back to New York and began spending summers in East Hampton. When Mr. Granitz died in 1970, Mrs. Granitz began living here year round.

She was a founding member of the

Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork in Bridgehampton and for more than 20 years volunteered as a docent at the Parrish Art Museum.

Her lifelong interests included art, gourmet cooking, theater, reading, spirituality, gardening, and politics.

She was an active member of the League of Women Voters, and while in New York, she was a reading tutor, and helped the families of United Nations diplomats from African countries settle into the city.

On the East End, she loved visiting local gardens, and belonged to the Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons. During the summers in the 1960s, she helped stage the musical revue known as “The Village Vanities.”

An eager traveler, she enjoyed learning about the art, food, and the residents of the places she would visit.

Born on July 16, 1920, in Brooklyn to Lyon S. Doughty and the former Mildred Harman, she grew up in Kew Gardens and Douglaston in Queens. She studied for a year at Mount Holyoke College.

She is survived by two children, Elizabeth Granitz of Sag Harbor and Michael Granitz of Mason, Ohio, and by four grandchildren. A son, William Doughty Granitz, died before her.

The Rev. Kimberly Johnson will officiate at a celebration of life ceremony in the fall at a date to be announced.

The family suggests memorial contributions to East End Hospice,

P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach 11978, or the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork, P.O. Box 1444, Bridgehampton 11932.
