Long Island Rail Road train service will ramp up significantly for the U.S. Open Golf Championship, slated to begin at Shinnecock Hills on Monday and run through June 21. A newly constructed Shinnecock Hills train stop will host an additional seven to eight trains per day. Train length will also be increased to accommodate additional riders.

Thirteen trains are scheduled to arrive and depart at the new stop during the weekend championship, in addition to the 12 arrivals and 13 departures from the Southampton station on Powell Avenue. Weekday practice rounds will see 10 arriving and 12 departing trains from Monday to Wednesday. Competition rounds starting next Thursday and Friday, June 19, will be served by 12 arriving trains and 13 departing trains.

Officials hope the increase will ease some traffic concerns on County Road 39, which already experiences major congestion during rush hours.

“The Long Island Rail Road is ready. Avoid the traffic and use our exceptionally reliable service to and from Shinnecock Hills for all the golf action,” Rob Free, the L.I.R.R. president, said in a release last week. “Extra staff will also be on hand at Southampton to help customers throughout the championship for a great customer experience.”

Schedules can be found at mta.info/alerts and on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s TrainTime app.
