Canio’s Cultural Cafe, the educational nonprofit that operated from Canio’s Books in Sag Harbor from 2009 until the bookstore’s closing in September, has found a new home at the Old Whalers Church, not far from its former Main Street site.

Offering talks and readings by authors, themed events, and other celebrations of literature, Canio’s Cultural Cafe will take up residence in Room 29, on the second floor of the church’s offices. It will continue to offer events throughout the year, including the popular marathon reading of Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick” and other public readings, a speaker series, community discussion courses, and workshops in creative writing and photography.

Summer office hours will be Tuesdays and Fridays from noon to 4:30 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, and also by appointment. Morning coffee-and-conversation hours will be held on select weekdays to be determined.

An opening reception happens on Friday, June 20, from 3 to 6 p.m. Those attending have been asked to supply a nonperishable food item to donate to the Sag Harbor Food Pantry, also located at the Old Whalers Church. Requested items include rice, beans, cereal, pasta, and canned tuna.

Entrance is through the church office door on the west side of the building. The office is not Americans With Disabilities Act compliant, but visitors can arrange to meet at an accessible location on the church grounds ahead of time.

Future programming includes a nature-writing workshop with Maryann Calendrille, comprising four sessions at various outdoor locations in and around the village starting on July 2. Photography workshops in the field with Kathryn Szoka start on July 1. An eight-week community discussion course, Choices in Sustainable Living, starts in September and will focus on sustainability from personal, societal, and global perspectives.

Also planned is a one-day marathon reading of a well-loved novel set on Long Island, to take place next year.
