Fall Fest Time in Montauk

The 44th annual Montauk Fall Fest happens on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the downtown green.

A clam chowder contest kicks off the festivities on Saturday at 11 a.m., and the festival will also offer food, beer and wine, live music, a farmers market, and a bouncy house and other activities for children. Chowder contest mugs can be bought in advance at the Montauk Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center and in front of the building starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Weather permitting, Saturday's fun will conclude with a fireworks display at 7 p.m. at Umbrella Beach.

The Mr. Poseidon Montauk Striper Challenge, a fierce competition with a large cash prize, brought hundreds of competitors to the hamlet for a catch-and-release striped bass contest that is touted by its organizer as the “biggest surf fishing tournament on the East Coast.” Critics say it left a trail of problems.

Whalemen, Shipwrecks, Coded Messages

Atlantic Avenue, which terminates in one of the most seasonally popular beaches in town, was from 1870 to 1918 a working man’s hub focused on the capture of whales. The historical preservationist Robert Hefner detailed this era along with tales of shipwrecks, Nazi saboteurs, and more in a talk last weekend.
