Gray and Baker Wed on the Beach

Tue, 07/09/2024 - 05:08

Andrew Gray and R. Layne Baker were married on the beach at the Bridgehampton Tennis and Surf Club on June 22.

“It was a stormy day,” Mr. Gray wrote, “and we were worried that our beach ceremony was going to get rained out. We got insanely lucky and somehow the rain missed where we were in Bridgehampton by less than a half-mile. The sun even peeked out at one point and shined on our faces in the middle of the ceremony. It was magical.”

Mr. Gray is a son of Kathryn and Todd Gray of East Hampton, Manhasset, and Jupiter, Fla. A graduate of Bucknell University in Pennsylvania with a degree in computer science and engineering, he is a senior product designer. Mr. Baker, who goes by Layne, is the son of Angela and Randy Baker of Sanford, N.C. He earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science at North Carolina State University and is a human resources business partner.

On their wedding day, both grooms were escorted down the aisle by their mothers. Pablo Campos, a friend of Mr. Baker’s from college, officiated.

Mr. Gray had two best men: his best friend from middle school, Dylan Creeden, and his best friend from elementary school, Brendan Sweeney. His brother Peter Gray of Austin, Tex., served as groomsman.

Mr. Baker’s best women were his sister, Abigayle Baker of Sanford, and his best friend from elementary school, Kayla Watson of Charlotte, N.C.

The wedding party also included Chris Why, Julia O’Brien, Lexi DeFalco, John Piermatteo, Alexa Durso, Ian Vogel, Christina Caruso, Nick Montgomery, Grace Cook, Scott Gulbransen, and Chloe Cottinaeu.

The grooms wore wool silk linen suits from Italy.

The couple’s “love story began when they crossed paths in February 2018,” Mr. Gray wrote. Mr. Baker was in school at North Carolina State; Mr. Gray had a winter internship in Raleigh before heading to Australia to study abroad. “While enjoying tacos, they felt an instant connection driven by their shared interests in music and travel and paired with their appreciation for one another’s energy.”

Mr. Gray was leaving for Sydney the next day, but they reunited after his time abroad. He said he was “captivated by Layne’s intelligence and kind-hearted nature.” Mr. Baker in turn “admired Andrew’s vibrancy and unwavering support.”

Mr. Baker moved to New York City in January 2020 and the couple moved in together in Astoria, Queens. When the pandemic hit, they spent a few months staying at Mr. Gray’s family house in East Hampton.

They got engaged in Italy in 2022, and returned there for a honeymoon in Ischia and Milan.

Time to Strip, Dip, Freeze

Polar plunges at Main Beach in East Hampton and Beach Lane in Wainscott on New Year’s Day accomplish many things: bracing and exhilarating starts to the year, the company of many hundreds of friends and fellow townspeople, and a chance to secure bragging rights that extend well into 2026. But most important, each serves as a critical fund-raiser for food pantries.

Support Where It’s Most Needed

Soon after moving to Water Mill with her family in 2015, Marit Molin became aware of a largely unacknowledged population underpinning the complicated Hamptons economy. That led her to create Hamptons Community Outreach, which is dedicated to meeting basic critical needs to help break cycles of poverty.

This etching by Mary Nimmo Moran shows what was likely the view from her home across Town Pond, with the Gardiner Mill in the background, a favorite landscape for her.
