Painting Returns to Long Island

Thu, 08/11/2022 - 11:59

“Trees at Sunset,” a 1931 painting by Renwick Taylor, has returned to Long Island after many years and will be temporarily exhibited at the Amagansett Library. The painting is a decorative landscape created during Taylor’s residence at Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany’s estate near Oyster Bay.

Born in 1898 and largely unrecognized during his lifetime, Taylor remains a mysterious figure about whom little detail is recorded. His sojourn at Laurelton Hall was a period of remarkable artistic experimentation. Demonstrating mastery in a variety of painting techniques and subjects, he thrived in the dynamic, creative atmosphere there.

“Trees at Sunset” was stored in a Colorado collection and not on public display for the better part of a century, until it was discovered by Bernard Goldberg and exhibited at his East Hampton gallery until its recent acquisition by a collector.

The library will host a presentation and discussion of the painting on Aug. 24 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The painting will be on display from Saturday until Labor Day.
