The girls varsity swim team won its first meet of the season, 82-75, in a dominant nonleague victory over Brentwood on Sept. 10.
The Bonackers got off to a fast start, winning the 200-yard medley relay by a 10-4 margin and qualifying for the Section XI championship meet. They went on to place first and outscore the Spartans in every remaining event.
“The enthusiasm was high, and the sportsmanship was fantastic from both teams,” said Craig Brierley, the Bonackers’ head coach.
In the 200-yard medley relay, Sydney Powers set a personal-best time of 25.95 in her 50-yard freestyle leg, Emma Kapon set a personal best of 34.13 in her 50-yard freestyle leg, and Sabina Piecyk had a personal best of 36.32 in her 50-yard backstroke leg. Piecyk also set a personal best in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing third in 1:08.57.
The girls also qualified for the Section XI championship meet in the 200-yard freestyle relay, with each swimmer setting a personal best on her 50-yard leg. Hailey LaGarenne finished in 39.13, Sky Hand in 34.99, Quetzalli Gutierrez in 34.05, and Ginger Griffin in 27.35.
In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Kimi Atienci set a personal-best time of 1:17.39 on her 100-yard leg, Alison Cardozo set a personal-best time of 1:22.56, and Kapon set a personal best of 1:13.72.
Molly Grande, a sophomore, and Avienne O’Shea, a freshman, were named swimmers of the meet in recognition of their performances in the pool and enthusiasm on the deck.
Grande won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:18.05, earning six points for the team. She also placed third in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:12.19, earning three points for Bonac.
O’Shea won the 200-yard individual medley by .03 seconds in a come-from-behind victory. She trailed Hailey Bendersky after 175 yards but caught her in the final lap and touched first to earn six points for the team. The time was a personal best by 3.9 seconds. O’Shea also placed second in the 100-yard freestyle in 1:01.63, earning four points and qualifying for the Section XI championship meet.
Heidi Rizzo won the 100-yard butterfly in a personal-record time of 1:04.07, qualifying for the Section XI championships, along with Griffin, who finished second in 1:06.38. Rizzo also qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Griffin set a personal record of 1:22.21.
Powers qualified for the Section XI championships in both the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles. She won the 100-yard race and placed second in the 50-yard race.
Rae Intonato set a personal record of 7:28.40 while placing third in the 500-yard freestyle.
The girls’ first home meet is at 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 against Connetquot at the Y.M.C.A. East Hampton RECenter.
