The Bonac football team won big in its first home game on Monday, shutting out Half Hollow Hills West, 34-0.

The team is now 1-2 after two early losses and may be set up for a good run, Jaron Greenidge, East Hampton's head coach, said Tuesday.

A heavy mist settled over the East Hampton field that afternoon. The game had been rescheduled from Saturday, Sept. 26, because of the nor'easter. "We didn't use it as an excuse," said Greenidge.

An opening kickoff return by Jackson Carney brought the ball all the way to the Colts' 5-yard line. It didn't lead to a score but got the crowd's energy up to match that of the boys.

The Bonac defense started strong, swallowing the Colts' offense right out of the gate and giving up very few yards. The ball didn't find its way deep into Bonac territory until the last minute before halftime.

East Hampton scored in the first, second, and fourth quarters, a mix of touchdowns and field goals with one blocked kick. "We didn't score in the third but the energy was there," Greenidge said.

The star of the show this week, the coach said, was Jackson Ronick, who "played a huge role for us," scoring three touchdowns and gaining 60 yards as a running back and tallying eight tackles and two sacks as a linebacker. "He was a beast on all ends of the field."

Greenidge also noted the play of Jack Kamimura, a senior from Pierson who is new to the team this year as a linebacker and running back. He "had some very explosive plays and was able to create plays for us when nothing was really going," Greenidge said. "He ignited our offense."

After practicing only three or four days as a free safety, Wylie Stern, a junior, had two interceptions and four tackles. His brother, Billy, the team's new quarterback, had a "clean game," Greenidge said, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. "He was able to manage and control the offense."

Greenidge said he's looking for improvement through the season and not just over a single game, adding that he's proud of the team. "As a whole, I thought the boys are continuing to fight, though not everything went our way."

The Bonackers have a game at Comsewogue in which they are heavily favored today, Saturday, at 3 p.m., and play at home again on Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. versus Westhampton Beach.
