The Ross School boys tennis team routed two large school division leaders last week, Ward Melville, which was the county tournament runner-up to Commack last year, and Connetquot.
The Ravens, who presumably will again face Bayport-Blue Point for the county small schools title, bageled Connetquot 7-0 on the 30th and defeated Ward Melville 5-2 on April 28. Both those teams were undefeated in divisional play as of Monday, as was Ross, which led Division IV with a 10-0 record. Commack edged the Ravens 4-3 in a non-division match on April 16, but the Ravens were short a player that day.
Ross’s powerful lineup has been boosted by the arrival this year of the Pena Lopez brothers, Carlos, a senior, and Ignacio, a sophomore, from Madrid. Carlos normally plays number-one singles, and Nacho usually is paired with Leo Carmo, a freshman, at first doubles.
The Ravens’ roster also includes Nicolas Sanchez, Alex Frohlich, and Rowan O’Brien, all seniors; Jagger Cohen, a junior; Oz McDonald, a sophomore; Peter Hackett, a freshman, and Valentin Gavilanes and Walker Bohnsack, seventh graders.
Nacho Pena Lopez, Cohen, and Bohnsack played singles in the home match with Connetquot. Carmo and Carlos Pena Lopez, Sanchez and Hackett, Gavilanes and McDonald, and Frohlich and O’Brien were the doubles pairings.
