By virtue of their five-man average in the Section XI Division championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on Monday, the East Hampton’s boys cross-country team qualified for the Suffolk County championships next Thursday.
The sophomore Jasper Samuelson led Bonac’s team with a personal record of 17:40.30 on the 5K course, making all-division along with the senior Liam Knight. Knight had a P.R. of 18:23. The other four in the race “ran their socks off,” said their coach, Kevin Barry.
Andrew Perez, a junior running cross-country for the first time this year, dropped two minutes off his previous best time at Sunken Meadow.
Also at the meet were three freshmen, Carson Diamond, Zimmerman Levy, and Chase Bohnsack. Levy learned only that morning that he'd be running in the race, when three of the team's top five were unable to do so. It was the freshmen's first time running the 5K course at Sunken Meadow, and Barry was thrilled with their performance.
