Bonac's Top Tennis Duo Third in County Tourney

Juliana Barahona and Sandrine Becht, East Hampton High's top doubles pairing, made all-state this past weekend as a result of placing third in the county individual girls tennis tournament at Shoreham-Wading River High School.

Had there been a state tournament, they would have played in it. The Bonac team also received the tournament's doubles sportsmanship award.

Top-seeded in the division tourney the week before, a tournament also played at Shoreham-Wading River, they were upset in that final by the Stabile sisters, Katelyn and Julia, of Westhampton Beach, 7-5, 6-0. Barahona is a senior, and Becht is a junior.

The county tourney, however, was dominated by Commack's Tannenbaum sisters, Emily, a senior, and Kady, a ninth grader, who did not lose a game in sweeping through the 16-team draw.

After watching the Tannenbaums play, Kevin McConville, East Hampton's coach and the head pro at Hampton Racquet, said they were "outstanding." Emily, who is to attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall, has a win over Westhampton Beach's Rose Hayes, who last weekend won her third-straight county singles championship. Both Tannenbaums have played in county singles finals in the recent past.

Seeded fourth, Barahona and Becht defeated Sayville's Jenna Guerra and Alexandra Gagnon, the tourney's third seed, 6-2, 6-1 in the consolation match. The Tannenbaums defeated the Stabile sisters 6-0, 6-0 in the final.
