In winter track, whose meets have been contested outdoors rather than at Suffolk Community College-Brentwood's field house, as has been customary, East Hampton's girls were outnumbered and overpowered by Sayville here Sunday, though there were several personal bests.

A snow shovel and snowblower brigade made the meet possible by ridding the track and most of the turf field of snow the day before.

Of particular note were Bella Tarbet's win in the 55-meter hurdles, in a personal-best 10.3 seconds, and Melina Sarlo's win in the long jump, in a personal-best 12 feet and 8 3/4 inches.

Penelope Greene and Ava Engstrom finished second and third in the 1,500, Greene in 5 minutes and 21.5 seconds, and Engstrom in 5:21.9. Greene led going into the final 300 meters, but a Sayville runner outkicked her in the final stretch. Another East Hampton entrant, Ryleigh O'Donnell, "p.r.'d" with a 5:28.7.

Greene, Engstrom, Tarbet, O'Donnell, and Emma Hren, who also ran in the 1,500, are expected to do very well in the cross-country season that is to begin Monday.

In other events, Bella Espinoza was second and Sarlo third in the 55-meter dash, Espinoza in 8.36 seconds and Sarlo in 8.5; Daniela Chavez placed third in the 1,000, in a personal-best 3:39.9, and O'Donnell was second in the 300, in 47.85. In the 600 meters, Greene was second in 1:53 and Engstrom was third in 1:57.

Sayville won the 4-by-400 and 4-by-200 relays. The 4-by-800 was not contested.
