A break-in at the Wildlife Rescue Center in Hampton Bays last week has cost the organization thousands of dollars in donations and hundreds of hours of volunteers’ time, according to Ginnie Frati, its executive director.

A Springs man with a long criminal history is back in jail, facing multiple felony charges, after a daytime burglary in which he allegedly attacked a 21-year-old woman in Southampton Village Friday morning. The arrest was made after police cornered the man in the yard of a neighboring Breese Lane house, using a Taser to finally bring him down, Southampton Village police said Saturday.

Police received a 911 call at 9:40 a.m. from the woman, who said that a man wearing a ski mask and holding a knife had broken into the house.

A pothole on Napeague came close last week to killing a motorcyclist, whose bike, after striking it, went down and skidded for about 100 yards, the length of a football field, across Montauk Highway.

East Hampton Town police said Carlos A. Buitrago of Springs, 27, was about a mile west of Napeague Meadow Road, headed west, when it happened, at about 10:40 a.m. on April 29. Man and motorcycle came to rest on the shoulder of the eastbound lane.

Mr. Buitrago lost consciousness temporarily, police said, and was unable to recall anything about the accident.

An actor with a small role in a movie being filmed in Montauk has spent the last five days behind bars, first in an East Hampton Town police holding cell, then in the Suffolk County jail in Riverside. The man, Gabriele A. Nevins of Milwaukie, Ore., 22, was arrested on felony criminal mischief charges early Saturday and has been unable to meet the $3,500 bail set for him in East Hampton Justice Court.

A 13-year-old Springs School student walking home last Thursday at about 3:30 p.m. after being dropped off by a school bus told police he had been approached on Springs-Fireplace Road near Teak Lane in Springs by a man driving a white sedan.

The car pulled up alongside him, the youth told police, and the driver asked if he wanted a ride home. He declined, but the man persisted, asking him several times to get in the car.

A Springs man is facing multiple felony counts after East Hampton Town police arrested him Sunday at about midnight on charges of driving while intoxicated.

Officers said they stopped Luis G. Vizhany-Cardenas, 41, on North Main Street, East Hampton, for swerving repeatedly into the oncoming lane. His blood-alcohol content was recorded at .09 of 1 percent, just over the legal limit.

A 2007 conviction for drunken driving, stemming from an incident in Westchester County, elevated the charge to the felony level.

A call to police reporting an injured seal on Main Beach brought an officer to the scene early in the evening of April 28. “When approached, the seal ran back into the water. Appeared normal,” the report concluded.

A man described by police as “East Hampton homeless” was found drunk and asleep on a bench behind the library on the morning of April 30. The incident report said that the man was “making a mess.” Police told him that he had to leave or face arrest for trespassing.

The scammer posing as a PSEG bill collector in calls to several local businesses was turned away by an alert businessman last Thursday. Vincent Balcuns of Balcuns Service Center on Main Street received a call telling him his electric bill was overdue.
