Preliminary work is to begin Monday on the Cranberry Hole Road bridge in Amagansett, which has been closed to traffic since 2023, when it was deemed unsafe.

The small bridge allows access to Promised Land and the Lazy Point area over the Long Island Rail Road tracks.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be handling the work. Clearing will begin during the first week of November, with demolition of the existing bridge scheduled for shortly after Jan. 1. Work hours are anticipated to be on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The timeline is long, however, as the new bridge structure still won't be built for another year, and traffic won't cross it until the spring of 2028, provided there are no further delays.

The bridge was constructed in 1895 and has a five-ton weight limit. Representatives of the M.T.A. will give a presentation on the replacement project to the East Hampton Town Board in December.
