E-Biker Badly Hurt in Crash

An e-bike rider was seriously injured Tuesday morning after colliding with a Mack truck in Montauk.

According to a release issued by town police yesterday, Keith Grimes of Montauk, 71, was northbound on Edgemere Steet in a 2006 Mack truck when the e-bike “appears to have entered his lane of travel” from the shoulder, “causing a crash to occur.”

Isaac D. Jarett of Montauk, 24, the operator of the bike, was treated by Montauk Fire Department personnel at the scene before being airlifted to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

The County Police Department’s mobile carrier unit conducted a safety check on the truck. Mr. Grimes remained at the scene and is “fully cooperating” with an investigation into the accident, which police say is ongoing. No criminality is suspected at this time. East Hampton Town detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call 631-537-7575.

Also in Montauk, another cyclist, this time on a standard bicycle, sustained minor injuries on Saturday night after colliding with a GMC pickup truck. The truck’s driver, Terrence John Curley of Montauk, 66, was eastbound on Main Street, he told police, and was turning right onto South Eagle Street when the cyclist rode into the truck’s passenger-side door and rearview mirror.

Ethan Adges Szerlip of Roslyn, 29, told police he’d been riding in the bike lane in the same direction as the truck, when it turned into his path, and he did not have time to slow down. He sustained minor bruises to his left shoulder and neck from the impact, and complained of a possible concussion, but refused medical attention at the scene.
