Teenage Driver 'Felt a Pain'

Thu, 08/25/2022 - 13:45

An unlicensed 16-year-old from Montauk was eastbound on Montauk Highway in Amagansett just before midnight on Sunday when, she later told East Hampton Town police, she felt a pain in her head and either passed out or fell asleep at the wheel.

The 2022 Honda she was driving, which according to police records is registered to a 56-year-old Montauk man, crossed into the oncoming lane and crashed through bushes, a fence, and, finally, a tree on Oak Lane.

The teenager, whose name was not released because she is a minor, was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

A security guard at Pierson High School in Sag Harbor reported a “suspicious male” wearing a face mask and “riding a bicycle in circles” near the school gym. The young man subsequently told police he was waiting for his friends to get out of school, and said he was wearing a mask “because it’s cold outside today.”
