Late Night, No Light

Thu, 04/07/2022 - 09:37

Late on the night of March 25, East Hampton Town police reportedly clocked a 2003 Nissan driven by Antonio Ramirez-Martinez of Mount Vernon, N.Y., at 69 miles per hour in a 40-m.p.h. zone. Not only was he well over the speed limit, an officer said, but the light that illuminates the car's license plate was not working.

The officer smelled alcohol on the driver's breath and asked him to perform field sobriety tests, which he failed. He was charged with aggravated drunken driving, a misdemeanor, after a breathalyzer test recorded a blood-alcohol level over the legal limit.

He was held overnight for a morning appearance in East Hampton Justice Court, and is due back in court on April 28.

Kendal Chandler of Los Angeles, 24, driving a 2020 Volkswagen Jetta, made an illegal U-turn in Sag Harbor Village near midnight on April 3, catching the attention of an officer, who pulled her over near Long Wharf. She showed telltale signs of intoxication, he reported, and submitted to a breath test that resulted in a misdemeanor charge of drunken driving.

At Sag Harbor police headquarters, a chemical test registered a blood-alcohol level high enough to warrant another charge, of aggravated D.W.I. Ms. Chandler was taken to East Hampton Town police headquarters in Wainscott and held there overnight for a morning arraignment before East Hampton Town Justice Steven Tekulsky, who released her on her own recognizance. She will appear in Sag Harbor Justice Court on May 13.
