Assault on an Officer Alleged

Thu, 03/03/2022 - 11:00

Yamit Hurtado, a 43-year-old East Hampton resident, was arrested late on Feb. 17 and charged with criminal mischief with intent to damage property, a misdemeanor. A police officer reported witnessing Mr. Hurtado kick the passenger-side front door panel of a 2006 Toyota Highlander, shattering the window.

He faces a second, more serious charge, a felony, for his actions afterward. As the police attempted to arrest him, they said, he sicced a dog on them to prevent the arrest. When an officer avoided the dog and moved in on the man, he kicked her in her right knee. The assault was so fierce that she was unable to stand on her right leg or help in the arrest. She is currently on leave as she heals.

Mr. Hurtado was held from the time of his arrest until the next morning, when he was released on his own recognizance. He was to appear in court yesterday, and again on April 13.

Nabil Ahmed, a 25-year-old employee of Home Goods in Wainscott, was charged with petty larceny on Feb. 16 for allegedly removing cash from the cash register. John Graf, who works in the loss prevention department for Home Goods, called police in and told them that Mr. Ahmed was suspected of taking money on two other dates as well; $70 on Dec. 20 and $200 on Feb. 6. He is to appear in East Hampton Town Justice Court this morning.
