Three Injured in Montauk Accidents

Thu, 07/08/2021 - 09:07

A pedestrian, a bicyclist, and a driver were injured in three separate accidents in Montauk in the last 11 days.

Driving a 2007 Honda on Saturday at around 3:15 p.m., Antonio Lopezrojas, 31, slowed to allow pedestrians to cross Montauk Highway near South Embassy Street, he told East Hampton Town police, when Leroy Boynton of East Hampton, 29, "abruptly ran" into the street in front of him. Mr. Lopezrojas, who lives in Montauk, struck Mr. Boynton, who was taken by Montauk ambulance to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital to be treated for elbow pain.

A bicycle rider, also complaining of elbow pain, was sent to the hospital on the morning of June 28. Neal Kalish, 61, of New York City told police he was riding his bike on the shoulder at the intersection of Montauk Highway and South Eagle Street when a Jeep made a left turn and hit him. Its driver, Michael Graziano of Oakdale, 50, said another car had stopped to let him turn, and he was beginning to do so when Mr. Kalish "suddenly emerged" from behind the stopped vehicle.

On June 30 at about 1:45 a.m., Nicole Realmuto, 20, of East Hampton was driving along Fort Pond Boulevard near Malone Street when, she told police, the steering system of her 1992 Jeep "malfunctioned." She hit a tree and was taken to the hospital to be treated for minor bleeding. The Jeep was towed by Fireplace Auto Collision.

They Know When You've Been Bad or Good

East Hampton Village is now home to 14 Flock license plate reader surveillance cameras, which amounts to one for every 108 full-time residents, if you go by the 2020 census data. They're heralded by local police for aiding in enforcement and investigations, but they use a technology that has proven controversial nationally with those concerned about civil liberties.
