The Police Were Watching

Thu, 06/24/2021 - 09:11

Two motorists were charged in recent weeks with driving while intoxicated.

Edisson Lucero-Carabajo, 31, of Hopping Avenue in Montauk, was pulled over in East Hampton Village at around 8 p.m. on June 13 after his gray 2018 Chevrolet nearly hit another car amid a string of unsafe moves along Ocean Avenue. An officer was watching, according to the report, and said the driver appeared intoxicated. After failing a road test, he was reported to have twice the legal blood-alcohol limit. Justice Lisa R. Rana arraigned him on the misdemeanor charge the next morning.

Village police also stopped Aria Shafai, 30, of Patchogue, on Saturday at around 1:30 a.m. after he drove "left of the pavement markings" on Montauk Highway near Georgica Road. The officer had him get out of his 2015 Mercedes-Benz at a roadside pull-off, where he admitted he'd "consumed three glasses of wine with dinner." He did poorly on roadside testing, refused the chemical test at police headquarters, and was arraigned in the morning before Justice Steven Tekulsky.

In a non-alcohol-related incident, yet another tale of caution for summer bicyclists played out last Thursday at 1:45 p.m. Timothy O'Connor, 62, of New York City was driving a 2017 Range Rover out of the Bates Masi Architects parking lot on North Main Street in East Hampton when a 14-year-old local boy rode his bike into the side of the car. The boy, who was not identified, told police he had not seen the car. He was treated on the scene by village ambulance personnel for cuts and bruises to one knee. B.L.

911 Switch Is Delayed

When contract negotiations for 911 dispatching broke down between East Hampton Town and Village last spring, it became clear that the East Hampton Town Police Department would begin taking the bulk of 911 calls in the township from the village. The turnover was to occur on Jan. 1, but it has now been delayed for at least a month.
