Accident Snarls Afternoon Traffic in Amagansett

An accident has closed the westbound traffic lane in Amagansett.

Update, 3:20 p.m.: Montauk Highway in Amagansett has been reopened, according to the East Hampton Town Police Department.

Originally, 2:20 p.m.: East Hampton Town Police have closed the westbound lane of Montauk Highway in Amagansett following a two-car crash on Thursday afternoon.

Heavy traffic delays in both directions have been observed in the vicinity of the accident, which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. just west of the Amagansett School.

Police could not provide additional details, as first responders were still on the scene as of 2:20 p.m. Thursday. This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.

When contract negotiations for 911 dispatching broke down between East Hampton Town and Village last spring, it became clear that the East Hampton Town Police Department would begin taking the bulk of 911 calls in the township from the village. The turnover was to occur on Jan. 1, but it has now been delayed for at least a month.
