East Hampton Village

A Cove Hollow Road resident called police last week to report an unknown vehicle in the driveway. It turned out to be a landscaper, there to do yard work, which the homeowner confirmed was the plan all along.

A young woman stole an $800 bottle of "Dr. Barbara Sturm hyaluronic serum" from Blue Mercury on Saturday. The store manager said she'd seen the woman browsing through skin care products before leaving without making a purchase. Video showed her putting a red-orange box in the shopping bag she'd been carrying when she entered the store.

Montauk

Ryan Keller received an email earlier this month saying that his Western Union transaction had cleared and an amount of $340 was being sent to an unnamed person. Police called it a case of identity theft, and Western Union said it would refund the money. Mr. Keller closed the compromised account.

Sag Harbor

On the morning of March 8, a Walker Avenue resident told police a man wearing a yellow jacket approached his house "with the handle of a knife visible in the front right pocket." The man banged on his front door and "screamed obscenities into a bedroom window," he said. On Saturday, the resident called police again to say he'd recognized the same knife, lying in his front yard. Police located the offender and warned him not to go near that house again.

That afternoon, police searched without success for "a man walking a small dog, wearing a jacket, jeans, and boots without socks." A caller had seen him, apparently drunk, wandering around Bay and Hempstead Streets.

An intensive investigation into potential criminal mischief that left Eastville Cemetery headstones extensively damaged, or so it appeared, has been resolved. Police were informed that the weathered headstones in question, which were found lying on their sides, had been that way for decades.

Police who responded last Thursday to a report of an open fire on Madison Street found instead a resident whose attempt to make maple syrup had "smoked a little when he started it."

The same day, a pharmacist at White's flagged a man who called to have a prescription filled for two inhalers, but then called back to say his doctor had also prescribed hydrocodone cough syrup. The doctor told the pharmacist she had not issued any prescription of the sort.

A 16-year-old bicyclist weaving in and out of traffic on Main Street last Thursday evening forced police to halt traffic to prevent an accident. The boy rode off in an attempt to evade police, but an officer caught up and stopped him at Division and Rector Streets. When questioned, he gave his mother's name and number, asking "Am I being detained?" Told he was not, the boy walked off, leaving his bike behind.

A group of juveniles seen on Friday afternoon throwing rocks into the bay off Route 114 was walking away when police arrived. The officer "had kids clean up garbage in the areaâ" said the report.

After a verbal argument early Saturday morning, a Long Point Road resident called police to remove his girlfriend from his house.

Love was not in the air at the Sag Harbor Inn either that morning, where two women argued most of the night about one of their exes. The argument escalated until one grabbed the other by the face "to stop her yelling," which left a red mark. She bought a different room for the rest of the night.

An Archibald Way homeowner noticed on her security cameras "a boy in a grey hoodie riding a bike in her yard" on Saturday. She'd seen him the day before as well, she told police, "this time just sitting in her backyard."

The "Dead End" sign on Middle Line Highway was spray-painted over the weekend to read "Life is cool" in red letters.

On the Police Logs 04.11.24

Police responded to the East Hampton I.G.A. shortly after 5 p.m. on April 1 after the manager called in a report of an “unwanted guest.” After an investigation, a 38-year-old man was arrested and charged with two counts of petty larceny: one for taking 24 cans of beer and leaving without paying for them; the other for taking a white Huffy bicycle that did not belong to him. He was released on his own recognizance to await a court date.
