18-Year-Old Charged in Jeep Theft and Resisting Arrest

Fri, 09/04/2020 - 05:26

A Springs 18-year-old was charged Saturday afternoon with stealing a car, driving it into another vehicle, and fleeing the scene.

Police caught up with him at about 5 p.m. on Springy Banks Road in East Hampton, where, they reported, he ran from officers, fought against being handcuffed, and spread his legs as they tried to get him into the squad car. Police concluded he was on drugs, as he acted "manic, combative, was profusely sweaty, and tried biting the asphalt."

The episode began earlier that day when Matthew Irvine reported his black 2006 Toyota Highlander, "worth $10,000 and in good condition," had been stolen from 98 Three Mile Harbor Road, near the Neighborhood House. A redacted report said a co-worker witnessed the theft.

A few hours later, Michelle Mathon had an even closer encounter. Her 2015 gray Jeep was hit twice, on Montauk Highway near Abraham's Path in Amagansett, by Mr. Irvine's car, which was identified by a witness's description of a Martha's Vineyard "Black Dog" sticker on the rear bumper. Ms. Mathon pulled onto the shoulder, but the stolen car also veered into the shoulder, passing her Jeep on the right and striking its side bumper.

The teenage driver, who was charged as a youthful offender and not identified, was to appear in East Hampton Town Justice Court before Justice Steven Tekulsky this morning. He is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, driving while ability impaired by drugs, and resisting arrest.

On Aug. 24 at about 1 a.m., Carey Favreau, 53, of Bethel, Conn., was charged with driving while intoxicated. Town police stopped his black 2015 Jeep as it was headed east on Napeague near Dunes Lane, saying the car had crossed the double yellow lines several times. Mr. Favreau failed sobriety tests, police said, and was held for the remainder of the night for a morning appearance before Justice Tekulsky.
