The Southampton Town Police Department detectives' division is seeking information about booby traps set on a nature trail in Sag Harbor that is popular among all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike riders, though the trails' use for those activities is not permitted.

At least one person is "tying hunter green parachute chords across the trails in an attempt to deter dirt bikes and A.T.V. riders. The chords are difficult to see and may cause serious physical injury or death," the Police Department said in an announcement Wednesday.

On Aug. 7 at approximately 6:15 p.m., a teenaged A.T.V. rider was thrown from his vehicle after one of the lines caught him by the neck. His injuries were serious, police said, and the incident is being investigated as reckless endangerment.

The Suffolk County Crime Stoppers offer a $5,000 cash reward for information that leads to an arrest. Information provided is kept confidential. The phone number is 1-800-220-TIPS, and a website, P3Tips.com, or an associated mobile app called P3 Tips can also be used.

The teen's injuries were caused by parachute chord strung on a nature trail in Sag Harbor.
