Investigate Death

East Hampton Town police have identified a woman found dead in her car in Montauk on Monday as Nikole Doering, 37, of Coram. Her family had reported her missing the day before.

Det. Sgt. Greg Schaefer said yesterday that police were investigating the cause of death, but that it did not appear suspicious.

The body was found in an S.U.V. parked in a public lot on an Old Montauk Highway bluff facing the ocean. Two guests at the Surfside Inn, which is across the road and a little to the east, called police at about 3 p.m. to report a “woman not breathing.”

Police sealed off the parking lot. Officers could be seen circling the car and the lot for the next several hours.

At about 6 p.m., the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office responded in a helicopter. “I couldn’t believe they were able to land in that little overlook,” said Helene Delaney, a manager of the Surfside. The helicopter remained at the scene for about an hour.

Detectives interviewed the two guests who had placed the call to police. The two left the hotel early Tuesday morning, Ms. Delaney said.

Police remained in the lot until about 8:30 p.m. Monday, when the department’s flatbed tow truck hauled the car away and the lot was reopened to the public.
