When Eileen Wells Tublin graduated from St. John's University School of Law in Queens in 1958, she was one of just five women in her class. She would go on to become a trial lawyer and an active member of her communities in Brooklyn and East Hampton.
Mrs. Wells died last Thursday at home in Brooklyn Heights. She was 96.
In East Hampton she was a member of the Ladies Village Improvement Society for 35 years and chaired several booths at its annual fair, including the food and toy booths. She was also the chairwoman of the group's bylaws committee in the early 2000s. In her later years, she enjoyed daily visits to the East Hampton Town Senior Citizens Center and made many friends there, her family said.
In Brooklyn, she had been president of the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange, a not-for-profit volunteer-run shop that supported independent craftspeople from the borough and beyond.
Mrs. Tublin was born in Brooklyn on March 10, 1930, the third of five children of George Wells and the former Frances Golden, and grew up there. Before completing law school at St. John's, she earned a bachelor's degree at the university.
She and Melvin Tublin, also a lawyer, were married on May 8, 1966. The couple bought their house on Water Hole Road in Springs six years later. Mrs. Tublin enjoyed spending time at Main Beach and at home in Springs, where her brother John Wells and her sister, Joan Vagan, lived down the street from her.
“She cherished sharing her love for East Hampton with her grandchildren, including attending the L.V.I.S. Fair, feeding the ducks at the Duck Pond, and sitting atop Main Beach for hours to watch them play,” her family said.
Mr. Tublin died in 2018. Mrs. Tublin is survived by two daughters, Sharon Tublin of Brooklyn and Pamela Tublin and her husband, Jeffrey Cook, of Brookline, Mass. She leaves two grandchildren, Alexandra Cook and Grant Cook. Her siblings, the others being James Wells and George Wells, died before her.
Mrs. Tublin was cremated. Her ashes are to be interred at Calverton National Cemetery. Her family has suggested memorial contributions to the L.V.I.S., 95 Main Street, East Hampton 11937.
