Paid Notice: Notable East End Chef James Carpenter passed away unexpectedly on December 27, 2024, in Hopewell Junction, N.Y. Chef Carpenter leaves behind his sister Judy and brother David. Chef James was a popular chef who spent over 30 years in the food service in and around the East End.

Chef James was Executive Chef at notablerestaurants such as Della Famina, Savannahs, Page at 63 Main in Sag Harbor, the Living Room c/o the Maidstone and Marina Bar & Grill. He was a leader in the slow food farm to table movement and was known to tap into the culinary delights grown and harvested locally to the Hamptons. Chef James served early in his life in the US Navy posted on the USS Midway. He will be laid to rest on Monday, April 14th, 2025 at 11:30 am at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, N.Y.

A Call to Rein in Chain Stores in Sag Harbor

Residents of Sag Harbor have come together to denounce what some see as a troubling wave of chain stores. A petition launched by Save Sag Harbor that calls for new legislation to define and limit “formula retail” or “chain establishments” in the village has been signed by over 500 people in the last week.

GeekHampton Moves West

After 15 years in Sag Harbor, GeekHampton, which sells and services Apple products, will close on Tuesday at 6 p.m. It will reopen on May 4 in Hampton Bays.

Item of the Week: Long Island Refugees in Connecticut, 1777

This Thomas Dering and John Hulbert letter had to do with issuing permits of return to those who’d fled Long Island during the British occupation, which is also the topic of the next Tom Twomey lecture Friday night at the East Hampton Library.
